The rulers of the Kamehameha Dynasty ended in 1872 after the death of Kamehameha V. the reciprocity Treaty of 1875. That occurred between the kingdom employee and the United States allowed for the duty-free importation of Hawaiian sugar into the United States in the year 1876. The increase in sugar plantation agriculture was given in exchange by claims for the land now called Pearl Harborand surrounding 5 miles of surrounding shoreline, free of cost to the United States. This was the beginning of the end for Hawaiian monarchy. The series of events in the late 1800s led to the overthrow of the Hawaiian government and annexation of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893. Queen Lili'uokalani was the reigning monarch & over her throne unwillingly as she was vanquished to imprisonment in her own palace. Pres. Cleveland conduct an immediate investigation on the events leading to the overthrow and the Blount report was completed on July 17, 1893, concluded that the United States diplomatic and military representatives at abuse authority responsible for the change in government. In March 1897, Pres. William McKinley agreed to a treaty of annexation, a resolution was written by Congressman Francis G Newlandsto annex Hawaii. McKinley signed the Newland's resolution which illegally annexed Hawaii, and on July 7, 1898, the states became the territory of Hawaii. |
