Human interaction with the Hawaiian islands dates back to early phases of Polynesian settlement followed by the British arrival, Ural American and Asian immigrants, the overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy, a brief experience as the Republic of Hawaii, and finally admission to the United States as a territory and then the state of Hawaii we know today

The arrival of Capt. Cook on January 17, 1778 marked a change of air for the client islands as this led the way for European and American settling into the newfound "sandwich islands" there was also significant influence from the Russian Empire, as well as the French in early Hawaii.

When the Hawaiian islands were united under the single ruler King Kamehameha the first in 1810, the eight major Hawaiian islands were united under one common rule. In 1819, Prince Liholliho became King Kamehmeha II, with his new found power and pressure from stepmother Ka'ahumanu , he abolished the couple system that had Peace and order in the islands. This marked the end of an era for native Hawaiians as well as the suppression of the indigenous and cultural practices of old Hawaii.
